Type 2 diabetes risk reduced by coffee and tea

Type 2 diabetes is on the increase, with a prediction that 380 million people around the world will be affected by the year 2025. Therefore, there is a lot of interest in lifestyle factors which might mitigate the risk of type 2 diabetes. Previous research has suggested that drinking coffee is linked to a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes. Now researchers at the University of Sydney report that consumption of coffee, decaffeinated coffee and tea all seem to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

They analyzed evidence from nearly 500,000 participants in 18 studies of the link between coffee consumption and type 2 diabetes. Six of the studies also looked at decaffeinated coffee and type 2 diabetes. And seven of the studies examined the link between tea consumption and type 2 diabetes.

Each additional cup of coffee consumed was linked to a 7% reduction in type 2 diabetes risk. Those who drank three to four cups a day had an approximately 25% lower risk of type 2 diabetes compared to those drinking between zero and two cups of coffee a day. Also, those drinking three to four cups of decaff a day had a one third lower risk of type 2 diabetes compared to those taking none. For tea, drinking three to four cups a day reduced risk of type 2 diabetes by one fifth.

The protective effect of tea and coffee against type 2 diabetes is not due to caffeine because decaff is as effective in preventing the disease. The authors believe other factors, like magnesium or antioxidants known as lignans or chlorogenic acids, may be responsible. Further research may identify these components. And it’s possible doctors might start to advise people to up their consumption of tea and coffee in an attempt to ward off type 2 diabetes.
