Elderly Benefit from Vitamin D and Oral Nutrition Supplements

Last week, Nestle Nutrition Institute issued a news release about the ‘Nutrition and Functionality’ symposium held at the 19th IAGG World Congress of Gerontology and Geriatrics in Paris, France. At the symposium, leading experts discussed the important link between nutrition and functionality in the elderly.

Dr. Luigi Ferrucci, Director of the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging of the National Institute of Aging discussed the role of dietary micronutrients in minimizing the adverse effects of oxidative stress which contributes to aging. Dr. Heike Bischoff-Ferrari from the University of Zurich in Switzerland discussed the direct effect of vitamin D on reducing falls, as well as fracture risk. Dr. David Thomas from St. Louis University Hospital demonstrated the benefit of oral nutritional supplementation in improving nutrition status and reducing disability among the elderly and malnourished.
The elderly are at high risk of vitamin D and nutrition deficiency, both of which can be risk factors for morbidity and mortality. This symposium highlighted the benefits of vitamin D and oral nutrition supplements among the elderly. The ‘Nutrition and Functionality’ symposium was sponsored by the Nestle Nutrition Institute and was part of the IAGG World Congress Program.
