Can Curry Reduce Wrinkles?

Fighting wrinkles is a concern for many older adults, and there are countless creams and serums which claim to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. A new moisturizing cream containing an extract of turmeric, a spice found in curry, significantly reduces fine lines, facial spots, and wrinkles, according to results from 2 studies presented at the American Academy of Dermatology 68th Annual Meeting last week.

Scientists from Proctor and Gamble presented 2 split-face studies, one with an all-white study group and one with an all-Asian study group. Both study groups included participants who were already using a moisturizer prior to enrollment. The participants were instructed to apply the turmeric-containing moisturizer on one side of their face and the control product on the other. In both studies, the turmeric cream was better than the control product in improving the appearance of fine lines, facial spots, and wrinkles. In fact, the turmeric cream was 15% better at reducing lines and wrinkles and almost 15% better at reducing hyperpigmentation spots.

Although turmeric is commonly used in complementary and alternative medicines from India due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, this is the first time turmeric has been shown to have clinically relevant anti-aging benefits, including reduction in wrinkles. One of the reasons for this is that turmeric normally has a deep orange-yellow color that would turn the skin bright orange. However, scientists were able to purify the turmeric plant into a white extract that is more appropriate for topical use. Further research is needed, but it seems that turmeric extract may be a promising addition to the arsenal of anti-aging products for fighting fine lines, facial spots, and wrinkles.
